Happy New Year!!!! As another year has come and passed, one can’t help but sit back and reflect. It is also a time to look forward to the future. In reflecting, I certainly didn’t get out and photograph as much as I wanted. I photographed 2 weddings and only made it to my Rockies twice. The worst part was that after 6 consecutive years, I was unable to make my yearly journey to Costa Rica and photograph with my good friend Greg Basco. I did however spend a little time evolving with post processing, both in techniques and in mind set. I experimented with compositing and further developed my post processing style. I have essentially given myself free rein to do what feels right to me in pursuit of my art. And while I have given myself “permission” to do so, I still firmly believe that that full discloser is essential to maintain the reputation and integrity of all photographers, professional or otherwise. I feel my new post processing approach has developed into a style that is becoming my own. My tendencies toward dark and light, (Chiaroscuro) and high contrast in my work is becoming more pronounced and it is defining my work.

While we can’t change the past, we can mold our future. My goals for 2015 are to shoot more, explore more and develop more as a photographer. If my aching back and bad ankle will permit me, I hope to do some backpacking with hopes to share my art of the backcountry where not everyone has the opportunity to visit. A trip to the Yukon Territories in northern Canada is in the early planning stages with the unfortunate consequence of delaying my visit to Costa Rica by an additional year. I do however, look forward to the adventure and challenges of hauling photographic gear and the necessities required for a safe backcountry excursion.

While my philosophy remains the same in capturing the best quality image possible, I am working more towards the art rather that the technical. I want to tell a story about the journey rather than demonstrate the technical merits or technical faults of an image.

In celebrating the upcoming year, I have dug up some early images from Costa Rica and more recent ones from two trips to Jasper National Park this past year applying some of my new post processing touches.
