Winter in The Canadian Rockies: Talbot Lake, Jasper National Park-Day Two

Day one  on Talbot Lake in Jasper National Park  was heavily overcast  and I thought I would give it another go to capture some nice morning light on the second day of my Jasper in January trip before heading home. Day two was just as overcast,  mild and as windy as the previous morning.  The only difference was the rain.  Who would of ever thought that it would be raining on a January winter morning in the great white north?  Walking on the frozen lake surface covered with a half inch of rain made me feel like I was walking on water.  Well, I suppose technically I was but… The light rain however, brought on a different dimension to winter photography.  When photographing on frozen Ice surfaces I usually look for interesting patterns on the ice to use for foreground. The rain on  this particular morning gave me an added dimension by adding reflections to my compositions.  Furthermore, the clouds parted as the morning progressed and while I did not have a spectacular sunrise to work with,  the light was nice and the final images I would produce would have an interesting mix of color and contrast between the blue sky reflections and  the naturally green colored ice surface.  A polarizer and a Singh-Ray graduated 3-stop neutral density filter was used to balance the exposure between the sky and foreground.

  1. The contrast on the first 2 are fantastic! It’s the first thing I noticed. Love all of the Lake Impression shots, thanks Fab. I think they really “work”
